Our Story

Many years ago, when the Earth was young, the internet was a very different place. You used your telephone to dial into the vast world of text and symbols. Not many knew of its possibilities, nor how to tap into them. Jill and Skylar were among the few that ventured in. They were members of a local dial-up chat board where the users called themselves “modemmers.” The modemmers would have “meets” where they would get together for fries and coffee at the nearby Knight & Day, White Spot or some such exciting local establishment.

For many years, Jill and Skylar attended the same meets and parties with the same people but somehow never really met. While Jill didn’t really know Skylar, only perhaps his handle, Kalavek, Skylar always thought Britva (aka Jill) was cute. It wasn’t until almost a decade later, after the modemming scene had all but died out, at a reunion meet, that Skylar finally caught Jill’s eye. At the time, Jill was with someone. However, soon after, she broke it off with her boyfriend because she was starting to have feelings for Skylar.

At first Jill wasn’t sure if anything was going to happen with Skylar, but she was patient. Eventually she invited him to attend a party with her. She was nervous about going to this party because it was a welcome home party for a mutual friend she had with her ex-boyfriend. Jill wanted Skylar to be there as a support system. They spent the whole evening cuddled up on a couch on the porch and went home afterwards to watch movies all night together. That night, April 28, 2002, marked the beginning of their adventure through life as a couple.

Since that day there have been many bumps in the road, but Jill and Skylar have faced them head on, together. They both knew fairly early on in the relationship that they would be together for a very long time, and they were right. At different times in their relationship, they have each gone back to school while the other supported them. They never wavered in their support of one another through anything they took on, and that is why they are so strong today. They tell each other everything, and love each other with everything they have.

On December 13, 2014, after Jill finally completed her last class for her degree in Anthropology, the couple had planned to have friends over for the evening for a little ‘Cards Against Humanity’ and pizza. It was a great night full of good friends and laughter. At the end of the evening their good friend Kim (who had brought the game) announced she had to go, so the group began packing up the cards so she could take them home with her. Skylar asked Jill if she had dropped her cards on the floor, handing her the cards she had last used. She took the cards and looked through them to confirm this, but there was an extra card in her hand.

The card was handwritten and said only, “Jill, will you marry me?” Suddenly, there was a ring in her hand and she was extremely confused and disoriented. All of their friends were in shock. One of Jill’s best friends, Caitlin, was beaming from ear to ear with a tear in her eye. Jill knew immediately that Caitlin had known all along what was coming. It turned out that Caitlin had been helping Skylar find a ring for weeks prior to the event.

Of course, Jill said yes. It was her dream to marry Skylar, and it was finally going to come true…
